Real Talk With a Utiva Graduate: Samad AbdulJaleel

By Nathanie Ike

Let’s meet you (Your Name, What You do, where you currently work)

Hello, I'm AbdulSamad AbdulJaleel. I am a Data Product Manager at Gradr, A startup that is  leveraging AI to improve the grading and feedback process in the educational sector.

Alongside this, I am a Data Science Instructor & Research Data Scientist .

Can you tell us about your career journey and what led you to enroll in the Cloud Development course at Utiva?

My career journey has been quite dynamic and interesting.

Initially, I started in the field of medicine, but I found myself increasingly drawn to technology. Just before the COVID-19 pandemic, I began exploring the tech world more seriously. During the lockdown, I discovered data science, which turned out to be the perfect blend of my interests in computers, calculation, and business.

I began my journey in data science through self-learning, taking advantage of online resources and courses. I eventually enrolled in a Computer Science degree at Lagos State University (That is a discussion for another day).

During my industrial training (IT), I was fortunate to receive the Binance Charity Scholarship to study Cloud Engineering at Utiva. This opportunity was pivotal as it allowed me to integrate my data analysis and predictive modeling skills with cloud technologies, further enhancing my capabilities in deploying scalable and efficient data solutions.

How did your experience at the Utiva Cloud Development School prepare you for your role as a Data Product Manager at Gradr?

My experience at the Utiva Cloud Development School was instrumental in preparing me for my role as a Data Product Manager at Gradr.

The comprehensive curriculum and hands-on projects gave me a solid understanding of cloud infrastructure, data management, and machine learning integration.

During the program, I learned to design and deploy scalable cloud solutions, which are crucial for handling the amounts of data we work with at Gradr.

This knowledge has been directly applicable in my role, where one of my primary responsibilities is to ensure we put our customers first, build efficiently, and save costs.

My other responsibilities include optimizing storage solutions and ensuring data security and compliance. Additionally, the skills I gained in cloud architecture have enabled me to manage and orchestrate various cloud services, ensuring that our data infrastructure is both robust and efficient. I also collaborate closely with engineering and data science teams to develop and deploy machine learning models leveraging our cloud infrastructure. Furthermore, my role involves developing and maintaining data products that provide actionable insights to our stakeholders. This includes creating dashboards, reports, and other data visualization tools that help our team make informed decisions. The practical experience I gained at Utiva in using tools like AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud has been invaluable in executing these tasks effectively.

As a Data Product Manager, what are your primary responsibilities, and how do they align with your background in the tech space?

As a Data Product Manager, my primary responsibilities include defining the vision and strategy for data-related products, prioritizing features, and ensuring alignment with business goals. My tech background equips me to understand the intricacies of data systems, communicate effectively with engineers, and leverage emerging technologies to drive product innovation.

Can you describe the process you use to set up and manage how data gets into the cloud at Gradr?

At my workplace, the process begins with understanding the data sources and their formats. We assess the volume, velocity, and variety of data to determine the appropriate ingestion methods. Next, we design data pipelines using tools like Apache Kafka, Apache NiFi, or custom scripts to extract, transform, and load (ETL) data into the cloud. We ensure data quality and security measures are integrated throughout the process. Continuous monitoring and optimization help maintain efficient data flows. Additionally, collaboration with cross-functional teams ensures alignment with business objectives and compliance with regulations.

What tools and techniques do you use to run data analysis in your current role?

As a Data Product Manager, I utilize various tools and techniques for data analysis. Some of the ones I utilize include:

Statistical Software, Data Visualization Tools, SQL, Machine Learning, Data Mining, Experimental Design, Data Cleaning and Preprocessing, A/B Testing, Collaboration Tools and Domain Knowledge.

How has your knowledge in tech influenced your ability to handle complex data management and analysis tasks in a professional setting?

My knowledge in tech has provided a solid foundation for navigating the complexities of data management and analysis, allowing me to tackle challenges with confidence and deliver valuable insights to drive informed decision-making.

Here are some of the ways I have been handling complex data management and analysis tasks:

1. Understanding of Tools and Technologies

2. Problem-Solving Skills

3. Programming Proficiency

4. Adaptability

5. Data Security Awareness

What current trends in cloud development and data management do you find most exciting, and how are you incorporating them into your work at Gradr?
