Becoming a Professional Product Designer

By Nathanie Ike

Let’s Meet You (Your Name, What You Do, And Where You Currently Work)

My name is Raymond Asogwa. I am a Digital Product Designer. I'm passionate about using strategic design efforts to create delightful user experiences and business success.

How Long Have You Been Doing Product Design and Why Product Design?

I've been doing product design for two years. I was drawn to product design because I love the challenge of solving problems using design and technology, and the positive impact it can have on the world at large.

What Inspired You To Go Into Product Design amidst other professional tech skills?

I was fascinated by other tech roles and picking up essential skills around them. However, due to my background in design and the empathetic and strategic nature of the role, product design was the obvious choice.

What Are The Challenges You Face as a Product Designer?

Keeping up with evolving technology and learning new tools would be one challenge. It is exciting and scary at the same time, because it is important to be constantly learning and growing. Secondly, ensuring my perfectionist self doesn't get in the way of continuous building and iteration.

What Was Your Highest And Lowest Point Since You Started Your Journey as a Product Designer?

Right now, my highest point as a product designer was when I proved my worth to myself by successfully leading a design effort in a team of 8 designers to build a blockchain platform. It was a testament to my ability to do greater things in the product space. My lowest point was the struggle to find my voice and tell my story, but it has taught me resilience.

What Do You Aim To Achieve In The Next 12 Months In Relation To What You Currently Do in Tech?

In the next 12 months, I aim to join a product team that solves real problems with design and technology, and to contribute more to building my personal brand. I also want to continue learning and growing my skills, particularly in the intersection of design, engineering, and automation.

What Are Your Short-Term And Long-Term Goals?

My short-term goal is to learn more about engineering constraints and the impact of technology on design feasibility. I am not exactly sure about the direction, but I know I want to build digital innovative products soon.

What role did Utiva play in your Journey to becoming a product designer?

Utiva played a vital role in my journey to becoming a product designer. The program provided me with the skills and knowledge I needed to bridge my learning gap and make meaningful career connections.

Which Individuals Do You Draw Inspiration From as a Product Designer And Why?

I draw inspiration from several product people, including the folks at Growth.Design, the Nielsen Norman Group, Jeremy Miller, and Dan Winer. I admire their contributions to quality design, product, and UX education.

How Do You Unwind?

Music, Cycling, Running, and Nature are my go-to activities.

Anything Else You’d Like Us To Know About You?

I am a quick learner and eager to take on new challenges. I am also a team player and passionate about working with others to create great products. If you love to engage in conversations that balance idealism and facts, I am your person.
