Real Talk With a Utiva Graduate: Olayemi Rufai

1. Let's start with your story. Can you tell us a bit about yourself and what brought you to our Data Science program?


 

 I am Olayemi Rufai, a Data Analyst with 2 years of experience at Midas LLC specializing in analyzing Risk. I specialize in leveraging SQL, Power BI, and Python to analyze complex datasets, generate actionable insights, and support strategic decision-making.

 My work involves developing and refining business tools for experimentation, measurement, and causal estimation, enabling cross-functional teams to drive impactful results. I have a strong foundation in data visualization, reporting, and statistical analysis, and I excel at communicating insights effectively to stakeholders. I am passionate about solving problems through data, constantly learning new techniques to adapt to evolving challenges. 



 

2. What sparked your interest in Data Science, and what made you choose our program?


 

My interest in Data Science was sparked by my passion for solving problems through data and uncovering meaningful insights to drive decisions. I chose Utiva’s program because of its hands-on approach to learning, strong focus on practical applications, and supportive community. It provided me with the tools and mentorship to deepen my expertise and apply data-driven solutions effectively in real-world scenarios.

 

3. What's one unforgettable experience or funny moment that stands out from your time in the program?

 

One unforgettable experience from my time in the Utiva program was during a group project when our data visualization accidentally showed negative profits for a company we were analyzing. While troubleshooting, we discovered someone had flipped the revenue and expense columns in the dataset. It turned into a hilarious moment for the team and taught us the importance of double-checking data cleaning processes.


 

4. Every journey has its challenges. What was the toughest part of the course for you, and how did you push through?


 

The toughest part of the course for me was Python, especially the Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) aspect. Understanding concepts like classes, inheritance, and encapsulation initially felt overwhelming. I pushed through by dedicating extra time to practice, breaking down complex concepts into simpler steps, and leveraging resources like tutorials and peer support. Gradually, with persistence and hands-on application, I became more confident and comfortable with OOP.

 

5. Which project or assignment really got you excited, and what made it so impactful for you?

 

The project I worked on under Oriyomi’s guidance was the most exciting. Oriyomi’s teaching style brought the concepts to life, especially when we applied Python and SQL to analyze real-world datasets. The way he broke down complex problems into manageable steps made the project not only impactful but also a turning point in boosting my confidence and skills. It was an unforgettable learning experience.


 

6. Looking back, what advice would you give to current students or those considering our Data Science program?


 

They should develop a tough skin or build projects and ensure they document their project in their GitHub. If they don’t have one. It’s the best time to create one for themselves. Doing projects may be tough and challenging but they have to be persistent and have perseverance and grit to pull through. That will develop their skills and honestly make them readily available for job after the program.

7. Do you have any tips or advice for current students or those considering the program?
 

My advice for current students or those considering the program is to stay consistent and practice regularly. Take advantage of the resources and mentorship available. Don’t be afraid to ask questions or make mistakes—they’re essential for growth. Also, work on real-world projects as much as possible; they help you solidify your learning and build confidence.
 

Also, SQL is super key. Don’t play with it. Learn it to heart. That alone can guarantee you an internship in the industry even if your Python skill is not yet strong. PowerBI or tableau knowledge is also important.
