By Isoemi Samuel
- 1. Can we meet you?
My name is Oluwasegun Abayomi, I am a seasoned Product Manager/Scrum Master passionate about leveraging technology to drive innovation. I am not just about building the product right, I am also about building it fast.. I currently work as a Scrum Master at SmartApps, a product led company that specialises in building payroll management systems.
2. How did you first hear about Utiva?
I stumbled on Eyitayo Ogunmola's profile on Instagram when I was reading about transitioning into tech. I found out he is the CEO of Utiva and I followed him and Utiva on both Instagram and LinkedIn.
3. What were some of the key factors that led you to choose our Product Management program, and how did it align with your career goals?
I had read and tried my hands on different areas of tech roles prior to knowing about Utiva and I had fallen in love with product management. It was while learning product management at Utiva that I got to know about Scrum so I decided to learn more about Scrum.
4. How did your experience at Utiva Product Management School prepare you for your role?
My experience at Utiva taught me about stakeholder management, How to collaborate cross functionally and that is one of the key aspects of being a Scrum Master. Knowing how to collaborate will even help you in facilitating scrum events in the right way.
5. Can you tell us about a product you've worked on and how you overcome the challenges?
I have worked on several products ranging from recruitment portals to payroll systems and I am currently working on Smartpay which is our native application. It is an employee management system that caters to all aspects of employment management from HR to payroll. The challenge I had at the beginning was trying to make the scrum team practise scrum the right way. I had to become a teacher and I am still teaching scrum to the team.
6. What specific skills or knowledge did you gain from the Product Management BootCamp that you found most valuable?
I love design thinking, I love scrum, I also love stakeholders management and product documentation.
7. What advice would you give to someone considering going into Product Management?
I would say if you're someone that pays attention to details and if you like to manage people then product management is for you. Also, as an aspiring product manager, make sure you document and share every step you are taking as you are progressing. That is what will be your portfolio, share on social media, keep a google drive folder for your documentations too.
