Real Talk With a Utiva Graduate: Emmanuel Nmaju
By Nathanie Ike
Let’s meet you (Your Name, What You do, where you currently work).
My name is Emmanuel Nmaju and I'm a Software developer based in Lagos, Nigeria. I specialize in crafting engaging user experiences through intuitive and visually appealing interfaces.
Can you walk us through your journey from Utiva Programming school to your current role as a frontend developer lead at NikeObi Tech Limited?
After completing the Utiva Programming School, I interned at two startups, where I gained valuable industry experience. Following this, I transitioned to a part-time role as a Frontend Developer Lead at NikeObi Tech Limited, where I oversaw front-end development projects. Upon leaving my role at NikeObi, I embarked on a freelance journey as a front-end developer, leveraging my skills and expertise gained from previous experiences to take on independent projects.
What motivated you to transition from full-time development to a part-time role, and how has this change impacted your career trajectory?
The opportunity to explore freelance and contractual opportunities while still honing my skills as a developer motivated me to transition to a part-time role. This change has allowed me to diversify my experience and take on more challenging projects, thus positively impacting my career trajectory.
As a coach for the 3MTT -Data Fullstack Development Learning Cluster, what strategies do you employ to effectively mentor aspiring developers on the program.
As a coach for the 3MTT -Data Fullstack Development Learning Cluster, my approach is centred on providing in-depth conceptual understanding to students while fostering an environment of inclusivity and freedom. I believe that by delving deeply into foundational concepts, I can equip students with a comprehensive understanding of the subject matter, enabling them to tackle complex problems with confidence.
Moreover, I strive to create a welcoming and supportive atmosphere where students feel comfortable expressing themselves and asking questions. I encourage open dialogue and collaboration, ensuring that everyone's voice is heard and valued. By cultivating a sense of belonging and mutual respect within the learning cluster, I aim to inspire students to actively engage with the material and take ownership of their learning journey.
How do you stay updated with the latest technologies and trends in your industry and how do you incorporate this knowledge into your work?
I stay updated with the latest technologies and trends in full-stack development by regularly exploring online resources, participating in forums and discussion groups, and attending relevant workshops and conferences. I then incorporate this knowledge into my work by experimenting with new tools and frameworks, staying informed about best practices, and continuously seeking opportunities to improve my skills and stay ahead of industry advancements
Can you discuss a challenging project you've worked on recently as a front-end developer lead, and how you approached and overcame obstacles during its development?
In one of my recent projects, I was tasked with leading the front-end development team to create a web application that required a strong focus on performance and accessibility.
One of the major challenges we faced was ensuring that the application was fast and responsive for all users, regardless of their internet connection speed or device capabilities. To address this challenge, we conducted thorough performance testing using tools like Lighthouse and WebPageTest to identify and optimize performance bottlenecks. We optimized code, reduced file sizes, and utilized techniques such as lazy loading and code splitting to improve loading times and overall performance.
Additionally, we placed a strong emphasis on accessibility to ensure that the application was usable by individuals with disabilities. We followed best practices outlined in the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) and conducted accessibility audits using tools like Axe and Wave. We implemented features such as semantic HTML markup, keyboard navigation, and ARIA attributes to enhance accessibility and provide an inclusive user experience.
What do you consider to be the most important qualities or skills for a successful frontend developer lead?
Effective communication, strong problem-solving abilities, technical expertise, leadership skills, and a passion for continuous learning are essential qualities for a successful developer.
Most importantly for me is being user-centric, it is indeed essential for a successful developer.
What is a user-centric approach?
A user-centric approach involves understanding the needs and preferences of end users and ensuring that the development team designs and builds solutions that prioritize usability, accessibility, and overall user experience. This requires empathy, attention to detail, and a commitment to conducting user research and gathering feedback throughout the development process.
By placing users at the centre of decision-making and design, developers can create products and experiences that not only meet technical requirements but also exceed user expectations and drive business success. Therefore, being user-centric is a crucial quality for any developer striving for excellence in their role.
How do you prioritize tasks and manage deadlines in your role at NikeObi Tech Limited?
I prioritize tasks based on their impact on project milestones and deadlines. I regularly communicate with team members to ensure alignment on priorities and proactively address any potential bottlenecks to meet project deadlines effectively.
What advice would you give to someone starting their career in full-stack development, based on your own experiences and learnings?
I would advise aspiring developers to focus on building a strong foundation in programming fundamentals, continuously seek opportunities for learning and growth, collaborate with others, and never be afraid to ask questions or seek help when needed.
Additionally, developing soft skills such as communication, time management, and adaptability is crucial in navigating the dynamic landscape of full-stack development.
Finally, one must be patient and resilient in one's career journey, even though opportunities may not come as quickly as desired, patience allows for steady progress and continuous improvement, ultimately leading to long-term success while resilience allows one to face challenges and adapt to changes that will help one to thrive in his/her career path.
Can you describe a particularly innovative solution or feature you've implemented in one of your projects?
In one of my projects, we needed to address the issue of long loading times for large datasets in a web application. To overcome this challenge, we implemented a server-side pagination solution combined with asynchronous data fetching. Instead of loading the entire dataset at once, we divided it into smaller chunks and fetched data dynamically as the user navigated through the pages. This approach not only reduced the initial load time but also provided a seamless browsing experience for users, allowing them to access and interact with the data more efficiently. By leveraging server-side pagination and asynchronous data fetching, we optimized performance and delivered a responsive and user-friendly application.
How do you approach collaborating with other team members, including designers, developers, and project managers, to deliver high-quality products?
Collaboration is key to delivering high-quality products. I believe in fostering open communication, mutual respect, and a shared understanding of project goals and requirements. Regular meetings, feedback sessions, and collaborative problem-solving help ensure alignment and drive project success.
What do you enjoy most about working in this field, and what challenges have you faced along the way?
I enjoy the creativity and problem-solving aspect of full-stack development, as well as the opportunity to work with cutting-edge technologies and contribute to meaningful projects. Challenges such as tight deadlines, complex technical requirements, and evolving project scopes have helped me grow both personally and professionally.
How do you envision your career progressing in the next few years, and what steps are you taking to achieve your goals?
In the next few years, I aim to further develop my leadership skills, expand my technical expertise, and take on more challenging roles in the tech industry. I am actively seeking opportunities for professional development, networking, and mentorship to achieve these goals, while also focusing on building exciting, relevant, and innovative projects.
What are your final words?
In closing, I'm driven by the endless possibilities that technology offers to shape a better future. I'm thankful for the journey thus far and I’m excited about the opportunities ahead. Let's continue to innovate, learn, and make a meaningful difference in the world through technology
