Utiva’s training made my goals come to life
By Nathanie Ike
Let’s Meet You (Your Name, What You Do, And Where You Currently Work).
My name is Bukunmi Oyewumi, Bukunmi Oye for short. I am a product designer and I work at an Edtech company eLimu (by CcHub)
Can you walk us through your journey from Utiva's Product Design school to your current role at eLimu?
I took a career upgrade course with Utiva in 2022 and the experience was great. We had amazing trainers (Ayoleyi and Geneieve) and an efficient support person (Favour). During my training, I was able to connect the dots from my UI to UX skills and the necessary things needed to make me a professional product designer. We were also peered in groups to work on a project which helped in bridging the gap between theory and practicals.
What inspired you to pursue a career in product design, and how has your experience at Utiva influenced your career path?
My career pursuit in product design was simply powered by dissatisfaction for where I was in my career journey and finances. And also, to fully utilise my skills and potential in bringing solutions to the tech ecosystem. With these purposes, Utiva’s training made my goals come to life.
What tools and software do you rely on for your design work, and why?
I used Figma for my UI and prototype designs and Adobe photoshop and illustrator for image editing and illustration designs. For wireframes, I use figjam and miro.
How do you collaborate with cross-functional teams, such as developers and marketers, throughout the design process?
When it comes to cross-functional collaboration, communication is key. Where I work, communication is seamless. I achieve this seamless communication by having product meetings where updates and changes are discussed, ideas are generated and designs are handed-off.
Can you discuss a time when you received constructive feedback on your design, and how did you incorporate that feedback into your work?
This was when I was working on a project sometime in 2022 and the feedback was on design responsiveness for mobile view. After the feedback, I became more conscious of how to design properly with the different digital views in mind.
What do you consider the most important skills for a successful product designer, and how do you continue to develop these skills?
Skills I consider important for a product designer include
- Research and analysis Curiosity and bravery to try things out.
- Eye for user-centred designs.
To further develop your skills, keep learning, ask questions, read articles relating to UI/UX, frequently attend tech fairs and have a mentor in the space.
How do you prioritize features and functionalities when designing a new product?
I Clearly Define the Goals and Objectives of the products.
Identify User Needs by Conducting user research to understand the needs, preferences, and pain points of my target audience.
I also weigh Impact against Effort, and features with high impact and low effort are my go to. This way, the development team pushes faster.
What factors do you consider in your decision-making process?
Factors I consider in decision-making include
- market worthiness
- company (business) financial capacity
- Technical skills and talent on the project
What Are Your Long-Term Goals
To establish an edtech training institute that trains tech talents and connects them with foreign and local companies.
What are your Final Words?
Live beyond yourself. Failure to push for more is setting a limit on the next generation.
