Getting my First Tech Job as a Data Analyst

By Nathanie Ike

Let’s Meet You (Your Name, What You Do, And Where You Currently Work).

I’m Adesola Dosumu, a Business Intelligence Analyst. I help businesses make informed decisions by drawing insights from their data using clear visuals.
I currently work with Reliance Health.

How Long Have You Been in the Data Analysis Space and Why Data Analysis?

I chose Data Analysis firstly because I was running away from coding, little did I know that I was playing. I also love visuals and the idea of creating visuals drew me in. The analytical and statistical aspects of working with numbers are some of the things that sparked my interest in it.
I have been in this space for about 2 years now.

How did you manage to get your current job role at Reliance Health?

A friend of mine connected me with someone working there, who’s my Team lead right now. This person called me over the phone to talk about my skills and experience at that time. There were no openings then but I made sure to continue keeping in touch with him. When an opportunity opened, he informed me. I applied and then did a series of interviews and an assessment. I also want to believe he may have put in a good word for me too.

What Are The Challenges You Face as a Data Analyst?

One of the major challenges I face as a Data analyst is the Data, getting clean data to work with. Working with dirty data is very cumbersome. Also, the varying tools one needs to learn because you never know what an organization requires.

What Was Your Highest And Lowest Point Since You Started Your Journey as a Data Analyst?

The lowest points were during the period of building and honing my skills. You see some people’s work and wonder if you would ever get to be as good. I dealt with self-doubt, and imposter syndrome during those periods.

The highest points were when I did projects and got good comments about my work, it encouraged me to do better. Another high point is being able to teach/ guide others who are looking to start a career in Data Analysis. Someone even calls me a mentor..Lol!

What role did Utiva play in your Journey in becoming a Data analyst?

Utiva set the foundation on which I am building my career. The classes I took back then in 2021 were so robust that all I needed to do was to keep learning. I didn’t need to do any extra courses in fact, other courses I did were like revisions of what I had learnt at Utiva. Also, Utiva helped prepare me for what lies ahead and build a good profile.

What Do You Aim To Achieve In The Next 12 Months In Relation To What You Currently Do in Tech?

I’m hoping to upskill, I mean I  have mastered some new tools aside what I know now. I’m also looking forward to moving up the career ladder in my organization, taking up senior roles, and overcoming more challenges. I’m also planning to improve my presence and visibility in the Tech space.

What Are Your Long-Term Goals?

In the long run, I am looking at building a brand. A brand that businesses can trust to help give direction and solve problems using their data. I love teaching and so I look forward to giving back by tutoring the upcoming ones in tech, especially for those looking to start a tech career. I also look forward to curating courses that are easily accessible and can help build a good foundation for its learners.

What are your Final Words?

For those looking at starting or have already started building a tech career, I would advise that they take your skill development seriously and ensure to connect with Seniors in the space so you can learn from them too.

They have to be open to criticisms and corrections, they also need to learn to be patient and teachable. A journey of a thousand miles starts with the first step, they need to keep moving and learn not to give up even when it feels like it’s not working.
