A Typical Day in The Life of a Data Scientist
By Nathanie Ike
Let’s Meet You (Your Name, What You Do, and Where You Currently Work)
I am Onyinye Okolo, a passionate freelance data scientist who works independently on various data science projects. Currently, I don't have a fixed office location, as I work remotely. My work involves solving complex problems, deriving insights from data, and helping businesses make data-driven decisions.
How Long Have You Been in the Data Science Space, and Why Data Science?
I have been in the data science field for approximately two years. My decision to pursue data science stems from my natural, unique intelligence. I am naturally creative, analytical, and possess strong critical thinking skills. I find immense satisfaction in utilizing these gifts within the data science field. It allows me to craft innovative solutions to challenging problems by leveraging data, making this career path not just a choice but a natural fit for my skill set and passion. Data science, to me, represents the perfect mix of creativity, analytical thinking, and problem-solving.
What Are the Challenges You Face as a Data Scientist?
One challenge I've noticed in my journey as a data scientist is my natural inclination to dive deep into every detail and pursue perfection in my work. Don't get me wrong, it's fantastic to be meticulous, especially in data science, where precision is key. However, it can be a bit tricky. Sometimes, I find myself spending a lot of time refining and polishing my analysis, making sure every aspect is just right. While that's great for accuracy, it can be a challenge when working against tight project deadlines. Striking the balance between being detail-oriented and staying within the project timeframe is something I'm constantly mindful of. It is about ensuring top-notch quality without losing sight of the practical constraints we often face in real-world projects.
What Was Your Highest and Lowest Point Since You Started Your Journey as a Data Scientist?
One of my most rewarding moments as a data scientist occurred when I realized the positive influence my content had on the lives of others. A significant high point for me was when a friend shared that after stumbling upon one of my random tech-related posts, she felt inspired to learn a new tech skill. She not only found motivation but also took action, enrolling in a course to enhance her skills. Knowing that my content played a role in empowering someone to pursue their passion was incredibly fulfilling. It reaffirmed my belief in the power of knowledge-sharing and community-building in the tech industry.
Challenges are inevitable in this field. One of my low points was grappling with a particularly complex project that demanded innovative solutions. Despite the initial struggle, I persevered, seeking guidance from mentors and collaborating with peers, eventually overcoming the hurdles. This experience reinforced my resilience and determination to overcome challenges, ultimately contributing to my growth as a data scientist.
What Do You Aim To Achieve In The Next 12 Months In Relation To What You Currently Do in Tech?
In the next 12 months, I aspire to enhance my expertise by delving into cutting-edge technologies such as machine learning, deep learning, and probably artificial intelligence. I also plan to contribute to the data science community through knowledge-sharing initiatives, mentoring aspiring data scientists, and collaborating on impactful projects.
What are your Short- and Long-Term Goals?
My short-term goal is to deepen my expertise in specific data science areas, such as natural language processing. In the long term, I aspire to mentor aspiring data scientists and potentially establish my own data science consulting firm, enabling businesses to harness the power of their data effectively.
What role did Utiva play in your journey in becoming a Data Scientist?
Utiva played a pivotal role in my journey to becoming a data scientist. They transformed a seemingly complex subject like Data Science into an accessible and understandable learning experience. As a complete novice, I initially had no knowledge about Data Science, but Utiva's tutors patiently broke down intricate concepts, making the learning process incredibly smooth.
The hands-on projects provided valuable practical experience, bridging the gap between theory and real-world applications. The Utiva Alumni group serves as an invaluable support system, fostering a sense of community and collaboration among learners.
This holistic approach has not only equipped me with the necessary skills but also instilled confidence, enabling me to navigate the challenges of the data science field with ease.
Which Individuals Do You Draw Inspiration From as a Data Scientist And Why?
I draw inspiration from individuals like Alex Freberg, known as Alex the Analyst, who has a unique way of simplifying complex data concepts. Jessica Ayodele and Ndane Ndazhaga are also inspiring with their remarkable contributions to the data space. Their work not only makes data science easy to understand but also incredibly exciting. And of course, I can't forget Mr. Eyitayo, the CEO of Utiva, whose passion for what he does is contagious. Whenever I hear him speak, his intensity and belief in the potential of tech space are palpable. It is like he transfers that confidence directly to me. I find myself immersed in the strong conviction that I can achieve significant milestones in this field. Their combined influence motivates me to dream big and work diligently in this tech space.
Is there anything else you would like us to know about you?
In addition to my journey as a data scientist, I am an avid reader, a writer, and a strong advocate for personal development.I firmly believe that continuous learning is key to staying at the forefront of the rapidly evolving tech industry. I am committed to collaborative efforts and actively seek opportunities to collaborate with colleagues and experts in the field. Currently, I am working alongside a dedicated colleague on a project focused on mental health. Our goal is to leverage data-driven insights to address pressing issues in mental health. The project reflects my belief in the transformative power of collaboration and technology in solving societal challenges. Once completed, our findings and solutions will be published, contributing valuable insights to the discourse on mental health. I am passionate about making a positive impact through my work and look forward to exploring more opportunities for meaningful collaborations and contributions in the field of data science.
