Utiva aided my Journey to becoming a Data Analyst

By Nathanie Ike

Please can you introduce yourself and what you currently do?

My name is  Olayemi Olorisade, I studied business administration and have over eight years of experience in sales, relationship management, project administration, and basically stakeholder management. I am an alumna of Utiva and I have been able to transition into tech as a data analyst.

What prompted you to learn Data Analysis with Utiva?

I was looking for a course that would be relevant in any industry especially because I am trying to build my career, so I was looking for anything that could easily fit into any industry and would also be relevant in the future, that was why I decided to learn data analysis with Utiva.

Most importantly, I picked Utiva as a learning school because I heard a series of positive feedback from those that have enrolled before I did.

That’s good to hear, most people have difficulty applying the training they have embarked on to what they do. Can you share how data analysis has influenced your work and has improved your work as a professional?

Taking a Data Analysis course with Utiva has really refined my work in so many ways.

Initially, I used to think that I was already very knowledgeable in business but with data analysis, I have been more organised, more proactive, and more conscious of research and data protection, processing and analysis.

Before now, I used to think that I understand customers, but my training in Data Analysis has helped me know better. Now I make my recommendations to my stakeholders that are fact-based based on properly refined data. This has made me more productive, and more valuable.

Do you think a lot of people are seeing the fantastic opportunities in data analysis considering the fact that people usually pick a skill in tech based on the hype around it?

Seeing the opportunities embedded in Data Analysis was one of my major concerns when I was trying to choose which of the tech courses to learn, but I will say that everybody has a unique value they can bring to the table. No matter the population, there is always a way to stand out.

For instance, I could develop myself to create my own work experience with data such that I am able to analyse data in a way that is exceptionally different from any other data analyst.

I don’t think most people can visualize the opportunities that data analysis can offer, because as I said earlier, one of the primary reasons I decided to do data analysis was because one can apply it in any field.

Anyone who wants to learn data analysis doesn’t necessarily have to leave what they are currently doing, it is meant to make them more productive in their field.

Have you been able to apply for any tech jobs or internships?

Yes, I took a voluntary role from April to June because I was already rounding up the data analysis course but I had some health issues that didn’t make me complete it with everyone else. I took a voluntary internship where I was able to apply what I had learnt. I was able to carry out various analyses such as customer and complaint analyses for the company and provide recommendations for them. This helped the company grow, positioned them better, and helped them come up with better marketing strategies.

Currently, I am working on projects that I intend to add to my portfolio and pretty soon, I will start applying for tech jobs because I believe I have gained a few experiences.

What role did your learning experience at Utiva play in your career path?

It has really opened my eyes to a lot of things, like I said, I took up an internship and I was really happy with the result when I was leaving.

I could clearly see the impact of everything I learned. I was able to use Power BI, SQL, and Excel to work on live data and see the result, the day-to-day impact on the process, and the performance of the business.

You were a part of the 3 months internship at Darlytics, do you think it has impacted your tech journey in any way?

First of all, I am so grateful for Darlytics internship placement through Utiva and I think it was awesome. There were a lot of things about the internship. Specifically, the projects that we worked on while interning have really broadened my knowledge.

It really helped me to apply what I had learnt. My project tested my skill set in the usage of Excel, Power BI, and even Python because we had a Python project. Before then, I only knew how to carry out machine learning predictions to a point but through the project my team executed, we worked with a case study of 10 customers. Afterward,  we were able to come up with some models to predict loans, and also to apply them to these 10 customers to know if they will pay back the loan or not.

It was really really awesome, I am grateful for the internship.

What’s your plan for the future?

My plan for the future would be to get a Job with a forward-thinking company as a data analyst, to apply my skill set and provide value.

Do you have any advice for anyone who is still contemplating getting into tech?

I would like to tell people in this category that there’s really no time, and the earlier the better,  they just need to develop the gut to go for it. It can never be a loss, even if they are thinking it will alter your career, especially for those that have built a career.

The truth is that they can always apply tech in whatever they are doing for more effectiveness.

What are your final words?

I will love to appreciate Utiva for the incredible platform that they have created for people to pivot into tech. I would say that  I have got value for what I paid for, and I am really grateful for the new perspective, for the new technical skill, and for everything I have learned with Utiva.
