The Hype Surrounding Apple VR Headset
By Nathanie Ike
The newly introduced Apple VR headset, called Vision Pro, has generated a lot of excitement online. This article provides an overview of the headset and explains why it has garnered so much attention.
Apple unveiled the Vision Pro at the world developers conference on June 6th, 2023. Although it has not been released yet, it is expected to become available to the public in early 2024, with a starting price of $3,499.
The Vision Pro headset is made of soft textiles and adjustable straps to ensure a comfortable fit. It comes in different sizes, and those who wear glasses will need to use specialized headsets that cost more than the standard ones.
The device boasts an impressive display feature, with two ultra-high-resolution monitors that together offer a 100-foot-wide field of view. Each monitor has a 4K display, resulting in sharp text and high-quality video from any angle.
The audio system of the Vision Pro includes two drivers in each audio pod, which can provide personalized spatial audio based on the user's head and ear shape. This creates a surround sound effect, making the audio feel like it's coming from the environment around you. The device also utilizes audio ray tracing to adapt the sound to the surrounding space. Additionally, it incorporates advanced sensors for enhanced functionality.
One of the notable features of the Vision Pro is its eye tracking system, which detects the user's gaze direction. This allows users to control the VR experience using specific eye movements, eliminating the need for external accessories like a remote control or tablet.
The Vision Pro supports various apps, including music, gaming, and streaming applications. Users can download familiar apps and even access special apps designed specifically for the Vision OS through the Apple store.
In terms of entertainment, the Vision Pro greatly enhances the viewing experience for TV shows and movies. Apple demonstrated this during the conference, showcasing how watching movies on the Vision Pro is akin to viewing them on a 100-foot screen. Disney CEO Bob Iger appeared on stage to express his excitement about the technology and demonstrated how Disney content will be available on the device, offering special viewing modes and interactive experiences.
The headset also facilitates video conferencing, enabling users to see others in life-size tiles that are displayed around them. Spatial audio ensures that participants' voices emanate from their respective tiles. During FaceTime calls, Vision Pro users are represented by a digital image called a Persona, which reflects their facial and hand movements in real time.
Apple prioritizes privacy and security with the Vision Pro. The device incorporates Optic ID, a secure authentication technology that scans the user's iris under different invisible LED light exposures. This data is compared to registered Optic ID data stored in the Secure Enclave, ensuring it remains encrypted and inaccessible to apps. Apple does not store Optic ID data on its servers.
Overall, the Apple Vision Pro VR headset offers a range of features and use cases, making it a highly anticipated and privacy-focused device in the world of virtual reality.
Despite the widespread enthusiasm online regarding this new announcement, the unveiling of the Vision Pro caused a momentary decline in Apple's stock price. Prior to the announcement, the stock was valued at approximately $186. However, more than 24 hours after the announcement, the stock price has decreased to $179.
Apple appears to have outperformed its competitors in the virtual reality industry, including companies like Meta who have announced their own virtual reality plans but have struggled to gain widespread adoption. However, with the Vision Pro's distinctive features and its appealing price point, it seems that Apple will become the frontrunner in driving innovation within the virtual reality sector.
