Moving Abroad? Accessing the Best Jobs in Tech
By Eyitayo Ogunmola
As a Black individual with a passion for technology, I understand the challenges of breaking into this exciting and constantly evolving industry. But, I'm here to share my journey and the key strategies I used to navigate these challenges and achieve success in the field.
My journey took me to 4 different countries between 2015 and 2019 before I finally found a home in the UK. Throughout this journey, I had the opportunity to work with some incredible companies including CreativeDC, Royal Bank of Scotland, and Afrissance. These experiences taught me valuable lessons and allowed me to build a network of connections in the industry.
Here are the top strategies that I found most helpful in navigating the challenges of breaking into the technology industry:
Networking: Building a network of connections in the industry is crucial. Attend events and meetups related to your field of interest, join professional organizations, and utilize LinkedIn to connect with people in your desired industry. Don't be afraid to reach out to professionals for informational interviews. These interactions can help you learn more about the industry and potentially open doors to new opportunities.
Skill Building: Keep your technical skills up-to-date and expand them. Consider enrolling in online courses or certification programs, or attending workshops and hackathons. Showcasing your skills through a personal project or contribution to an open-source project can also make you stand out to potential employers.
Diversifying Your Search: Don't limit your job search to just the biggest tech companies. Look for opportunities at startups, small businesses, and government organizations. These organizations may be more open to diversity and inclusion initiatives, and may provide more opportunities for growth and development.
Utilizing Recruitment Programs: Many technology companies offer recruitment programs specifically designed to help underrepresented groups, including Blacks and minorities, break into the industry. Research companies that offer these programs and apply to them.
Building a Strong Personal Brand: Building a strong personal brand, including a well-crafted resume, LinkedIn profile, and online portfolio, can help you stand out in a competitive job market. Make sure your personal brand accurately reflects your skills, experience, and values, and showcase your achievements and contributions to the community.
As a Black individual who has successfully navigated the challenges of breaking into the technology industry, I want to inspire others to pursue their passions and believe in their abilities. With hard work, perseverance, and a commitment to continuous learning, you too can achieve success in this exciting field.
